NTSB investigates Red Line accident that killed 2 Metro track workers / The Washington Post

Five Metro workers have been killed on the tracks in the past seven months. The safety problems, including a Red Line crash June 22 that killed nine people, have triggered an upheaval in Metro’s leadership and prompted the White House to plan an overhaul of transit oversight nationwide. Read More

OSHA has cited New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc.

For alleged repeat and serious violations of workplace safety standards following an inspection at the shoe manufacturer’s Lawrence, Mass., distribution center. The company faces a total of $42,225 in proposed fines.

Cell Phones and Driving


cell phone x-ray-780027Cell phones play an integral role in our society. However, the convenience they offer must be judged against the hazards they pose. Most countries prohibit the use of hand-held phones while driving, but in the United States over 190 million people used cell phones as of June 2005, compared with approximately 4.3 million in 1990. According to the
Human Factors quarterly journal, “cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year” (2005). The same study reported that motorists who are engaged in cell phone conversations while driving are less capable than drunk drivers with blood alcohol levels exceeding .08. These statistics are frightening considering how pervasive cell phones are in our society. With a greater awareness of the potential cell phones have to distract drivers, many states, and even cities, are adopting laws that limit or restrict the use of cell phones while driving. Dangers of Driving and Using Your Cell Phone

car-talkNew research shows that people have greater difficulty  maintaining a fixed speed, or keeping their car safe in a single lane when performing tasks that simulated  conversing on a mobile phone, than if they were driving without the distraction. Contrary to expectation, the speaking and listening were equally distracting. The research was conducted at the University of Illinois and will be published in the next edition of Applied Cognitive Psychology.  Continued…
