Working Families

Working Families

As a membership, did you know about this? This is a great site for the Working Families of America.

Dear Labor Activist, What a surprise. Another massive corporation is looking out for its executives and big investors at the expense of workers. This time, it’s AT&T. In current contract negotiations with its workers, AT&T keeps pushing for cuts in quality jobs, health care benefits and standard of living increases. The  contract  has  expired,   and  negotiators  are  working  around  the  clock  to  reach  a  new  agreement,   but  AT&T  is  insistent on   making   draconian   cuts.   The   company   claims   these   cuts   are   necessary   because   of   the   poor   economy,   even   though telecom continues to expand and remain profitable. Just   last   year,   AT&T  made   $12.9   billion  in  profits almost   a   billion  more   than  the   previous   year,   and  its   CEO  Randall Stephenson received more than $15 million in compensation.

Sign our petition in support of AT&T workers. Lets show AT&T the whole labor movement is mobilized behind its workers.

AT&T can and should be a leader in supporting quality middle class jobs and benefits, which make communities and our economy  stronger  and  increase  demand  for  AT&T’s  services.   But  instead,   AT&T’s  demands  would  weaken  the  economy at a critical time in our country.

The Communications Workers of America, which represents AT&T workers, has shown the company how to save money without   placing  the   entire   burden   on  workers.   But,   AT&T  executives   are   looking   to  use   the   cur rent   economic   crisis   to hoard even more profits for themselves. This is exactly the wrong thing to do. Sign our petition urging AT&T to do the right thing and stop cutting jobs and benefits. Fortune   Magazine   recently   named   AT&T   the   world’s   Most   Admired   Telecom   Company.   In   response,   AT&T   CEO Stephenson  said,  “This   honor   is   a  real   tribute   to  the  competitive  drive,   the   passion  to  serve   and  the  innovative  spirit that defines the people of AT&T.” But   actions   speak   louder   than   words.   If   AT&T   really   cares   about   its   employees,   it   will   stop   trying   to   squeeze   wage increases  and  benefits  from  them,   and  star t  supporting  more  quality  jobs,   a  better  standard  of   living  and  real   health  care reform. The contract   negotiations  with  AT&T  are  a  critical  moment  for  workers  across  the  country  and  for   the  U.S.   economy.   In these   tough   times,   the   best   thing   we   can   do   is   strengthen   America’s   workers   and   the   middle   class and   that   means ensuring there are more quality jobs with good wages and health care for all.    Show AT&T that America’s workers are united. Sign the petition today. In solidarity, Marc Laitin AFLCIO Online Mobilization Coordinator And a proud member of the Washington Baltimore Newspaper Guild, Local 32035, TNGCWA, AFLCIO Infomer Volume 9, Issue 15, April 15, 2009 In PDF
