Roger Hickey of the Campaign for America’s Future has issued a new challenge to America’s progressives: on his blog this week, he asks readers to take a pledge to make their next car purchase a made-in-the-USA vehicle. The goal is to help revive the US auto industry–and all its associated union jobs–by building grassroots support for cars made here. Pledge signers can choose from several options, including: * that your next car will be made in the USA; * that it will be more fuel-efficient than the last one; * that you will only consider cars built by UAW members; * plus you can sign a petition in support of US auto-supply chain manufacturing jobs. President Leo Gerard of the United Steelworkers connects the need for a US-based auto industry with the health of America’s middle class with four up-close-and-personal profiles of laid-off auto supply-chain workers. As a guest blogger on the Huffington Post, Gerard reaches out to the larger community of progressives who might not understand just why US-based manufacturing jobs are critically important even to white-collar Americans.
