AA Workers Call on Governor and State Reps for Support

February 21, 2012

15,000 Pledge Support to Save American Airlines Jobs

(TULSA, Okla.) — American Airlines workers in Tulsa will be calling on Governor Mary Fallin and seven congressional delegates as well as other state representatives to add their names to www.IsupportAmericanJobs.com, which has attracted the support of more than 15,000 people from coast to coast. Workers also began printing and assembling hundreds of yard signs to publicize their campaign.

“This effort is about jobs, which is something every elected official in Oklahoma can get behind without regard to political affiliation,” said Rick Mullings, organizer for the Transport Workers Union and member of Local 514, which represents about 5,600 airline mechanics and related workers in Tulsa. “These skilled workers are military veterans, mothers, fathers and heads of households. They pay taxes, support local charities, including donating blood to the American Red Cross. They spend their wages throughout our communities. If they lose their jobs, the impact will be felt throughout northeastern Oklahoma.”

TWU Local 514 launched www.IsupportAmericanJobs.com to allow all Tulsa area residents and people around the country to pledge their support to keep jobs in America. The company has announced plans to cut 13,000 people from its workforce nationwide – 2,100 from the Tulsa area. Many of these jobs could end up overseas.
Citizens can show their support to keep jobs in America by visiting the website and adding their names. They can also view the list of people and locations who have already signed.

“It’s critical that our elected officials and community leaders continue the fight to keep these jobs in America. They really have no reason not to sign,” said Mullings. “It costs nothing and sends a strong message about America’s need for a strong middle class to drive the economy in our communities.”
