Second Step Grievance Meeting

On Tuesday, October 6, I attended our scheduled Second Step Grievance Meeting with the Company, where I presented four grievances.

Of those four grievances:

  • 1 grievance was withdrawn.
  • 1 grievance was carried over to the next Second Step Grievance Meeting.
  • 2 grievances were moved forward to the Grievance Review Board (GRB).

While we were unable to reach an agreement on the grievances moving to the GRB, we will continue pursuing them through the contractual grievance process. Our responsibility is to ensure that our members receive fair representation and that the Company is held accountable to the agreements we have in place.

Not every grievance gets resolved at the Second Step level, but that does not mean the fight is over. We will continue working through the process and pursuing the best possible outcomes for our members.

Union Business

In addition to Tuesday’s Second Step Grievance Meeting, I continued working on grievance-related matters and addressing issues affecting our membership.

Vacation: I was on scheduled vacation Wednesday, October 7, through Friday, October 9.

Benefits Update

This week, I continued assisting members with setting up and making changes to their NGP Union-sponsored benefit accounts. I also worked with members on FMLA-related issues and other benefit concerns, helping them navigate the process and get the information they need.

As a reminder, if you are experiencing issues with your benefits, whether they involve enrollment, coverage, claims, or FMLA, please reach out. We are here to help our members understand their benefits and work through any problems that may arise.

Upcoming Benefits Fair – October 26

American Airlines will be holding its Benefits Fair at Tulsa Base on Monday, October 26. TWU-sponsored Benefits Counselors will also be on base to assist members with their Union-sponsored benefits.

This is a good opportunity to review your current coverage, make any necessary changes, ask questions, and ensure your beneficiary information is up to date.

Don’t wait until you need your benefits to find out what coverage you have. Take the time to understand your options and make sure you and your family are protected.

Safety Corner

Don’t Let Production Pressure Compromise Safety

In aircraft maintenance, we all understand the importance of meeting schedules and getting aircraft back into service. However, no deadline, departure time, or production goal should ever come before the safety of our members or the aircraft we maintain.

We work in an environment where mistakes can have serious consequences. When production pressure increases, it can be tempting to rush through a task, skip a step, or take a shortcut to get the job done. That is when we need to be especially careful.

Remember these important safety practices:

  • Follow established procedures. Always use the applicable maintenance manuals, procedures, and required documentation. Never substitute shortcuts for approved processes.
  • Use the proper tools and PPE. If you don’t have the correct equipment to perform a job safely, address the issue before proceeding.
  • Never sign off work you haven’t performed or properly verified. Your signature carries responsibility. Make sure your documentation accurately reflects the work completed.
  • Don’t allow yourself to be rushed. Production schedules are important, but they never justify compromising safety or proper maintenance practices.
  • Speak up when something isn’t right. If you are being pressured to perform work unsafely, notify your supervisor and involve your Union representative when necessary.

Management is responsible for providing the proper tools, training, manpower, and working conditions necessary to perform our jobs safely. Our members should never be placed in a position where they feel they must choose between following proper procedures and meeting production expectations.

As Union members and aviation maintenance professionals, we have a responsibility to protect ourselves, our coworkers, and the flying public.

Remember: Production schedules can be adjusted. Deadlines can be changed. But the consequences of a serious safety mistake may last a lifetime.

Work safely, follow the procedures, and never let anyone pressure you into compromising your safety or your integrity.

Welfare & Entertainment Committee

As we move into the fall season, our Welfare & Entertainment Committee has several exciting events coming up for our members and their families. We encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities to get together, enjoy some time away from work, and celebrate the friendships and solidarity that make Local 514 strong.

Tulsa Oilers Hockey – October 17

The Tulsa Oilers will kick off their home hockey season on Saturday, October 17. Be on the lookout for additional information regarding tickets and upcoming opportunities to enjoy Oilers hockey with your Union brothers and sisters.

Trunk or Treat – Saturday, October 24

Our annual Trunk or Treat will take place at the TWU Local 514 Union Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Bring the kids and enjoy an evening of Halloween fun, including our candy haunted house, inflatables, and plenty of treats. This is always a great opportunity for our Union families to come together and enjoy a safe, fun-filled evening.

TWU Local 514 80th Anniversary Adult Party – Saturday, November 21

This year marks a special milestone as TWU Local 514 celebrates 80 years of solidarity (1946–2026)!

Our annual Adult Party will be held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa from 6:00 p.m. to midnight.

The evening will feature a live interactive DJ, digital and printed photo booths, magicians, special guests, casino games with prizes, food, drinks, and much more.

This year’s celebration is about more than just a party. It’s about recognizing the generations of Union members who built Local 514 into what it is today and celebrating the members who continue carrying that legacy forward.

80 Years of Solidarity — Built by Our Members, Powered by Solidarity!

A Season of Change, A Union That Stands Strong

As the leaves begin to change and the cooler weather settles in, fall reminds us that change is a part of life. But one thing that should never change is our commitment to standing together as Union brothers and sisters.

For 80 years, TWU Local 514 has stood through challenges, changes in leadership, difficult negotiations, and the many ups and downs of our industry. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: the strength of this Local has always come from its membership.

As we look toward the upcoming holiday season and begin preparing for contract negotiations in 2027, we must remember that the wages, benefits, working conditions, and protections we enjoy today didn’t come without a fight. They were earned through the determination, sacrifices, and solidarity of the Union members who came before us.

We owe it to them, ourselves, and the next generation of aviation workers to continue that fight.

Whether you’re working in the hangars, shops, docks, or anywhere across Tulsa Base, remember that every member matters, every voice deserves to be heard, and every contractual right is worth protecting.

This fall, as we gather with family and friends and enjoy the upcoming holidays, let’s also remember the Union family we are part of every day.

Seasons may change, but our commitment to one another must never waver.

Stay safe, look out for one another, and never forget that when we stand together, there is no challenge we cannot face.

United We Stand. Divided We Fall.
