SALLY FRASIER OBITUARY
Sally Newlon Freeman Frasier
Sally Newlon Freeman Frasier, 80, passed away at home on August 21, 2022.
Sally was born December 17, 1941, to Gretchen Newlon and Charles Robert Freeman at Ft. Smith, Arkansas. She attended public schools in Ft. Smith and then Tulsa University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and graduated with an education degree. At TU, Sally met law student Jim Frasier and they married in 1963.
When they graduated, Jim joined his brother Tomy Dee Frasier in a Tulsa legal practice and Sally concentrated on raising her children and her own career of public service. Early on, she volunteered at Tulsa Boys Home and Meals on Wheels.
A committed social activist, Sally threw much energy into the Democratic Party, in which her husband was heavily involved. Sally became a talented organizer and was active in Tulsa County, First District and Oklahoma Democratic Party affairs. She was active in Heart of the Party and Federation of Democratic Women’s Club, and she was named a local “Champion of Labor” and honored with the Eagle Award by the Northeastern Oklahoma Labor Council. She chaired the First District Democratic Committee for several years and she was a delegate to several presidential nominating conventions. She was an elector in the historic election of President Barack Obama.
Sally championed equal rights, focusing much of her time and attention as an advocate of women’s rights. She served on the Oklahoma Commission for the Status of Women and the Oklahoma Human Rights Commission, and on the board of Planned Parenthood of Eastern Oklahoma & Western Arkansas. She was a graduate of Leadership Tulsa and Leadership Oklahoma, and served on the board of the Booker T. Washington High School Foundation.
Sally dedicated herself to elevating the importance of public libraries, and in 1985 was appointed to the Tulsa City-County Library Commission. During her 34-year-tenure on the Commission, she chaired a number of committees and the Commission itself. She was a proponent of future library services as chair of Long Range Planning. In 1996, she was named a “Library Champion” and placed on the American Library Association’s 50th Anniversary Honor Roll, representing the state of Oklahoma. The next year, she was appointed a delegate to the Governor’s Conference on Libraries and Information Services and named to the Tulsa City-County Library Hall of Fame.
While Sally is remembered for her many civic endeavors, family, home and friends were where she found her greatest joy. Friends and family fondly recall the always open door of a warm home filled with myriad collections and memorabilia. A charter member of the Antique Collectors Guild, Sally was known to carry along her harmonica on road trips to liven up the band of women on their annual excursions to antiquing destinations.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents and brother Charles Freeman. She is survived by her husband James E. “Jim” Frasier, children Frank Frasier and Molly Frasier; sister Lisa Lyons and brother Drew Freeman, and five grandchildren
A celebration of life will be held at the central Tulsa City-County Library on October 29, at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Planned Parenthood of Eastern Oklahoma & Western Arkansas, Friends of the Library, or the Oklahoma Democratic Party.
