Local 514’s Digest for the week of January 5th, 2024

President:

Heads up, if the company calls you into a meeting, either alone or with a large group of your coworkers, they may document that conversation. They may ask you to sign a roster, like they did in Hangars 5 & 6, then accuse all that signed it of not being on the airplane during work hours. In that case the workers found out two days later from crew chiefs that it was a coach and counseling session that was recorded in their personal file. We are talking with the company to get that removed from their file. If we are not successful I will file a Presidential grievance on their behalf. Other Union leaders across the system agree with me that while they can coach and counsel employees they need to let you know at the time of the discussion that they will be putting it in your file. What you need to be aware of is when your management team is considered to be under-performing by their bosses they will be looking for people to write up so they can say “look, it’s not my fault or my processes that’s causing failure, its the workers fault”.
In article 32 of your contract you have a right to Union Representation on issues that may lead to discipline. The company claims they have a right to counsel you without a Union Rep present. They will document the conversation, counsel you again, document it again, then write you up with a discipline letter in your file that could lead to termination.
They are watching breaks and lunch periods.

Demand a Union Steward to protect your rights and please look out for each other. Every time a boss is on the floor the workers should know it.

Tracy Hardin:

Happy New Year!

I hope we all were able to spend some time with family and friends over the holidays. With the new year comes some new challenges, but don’t forget previous commitments.

Benefits Committee: Just look at all of your insurances, Union and AA sponsored, and if you have a question let us help find an answer. Don’t let the mistake just ride out for 12 months, catch it early.
Grievance Committee: We are trying to do a better job to settle or bring more grievances to the GRB. This year we hope to see the grievance numbers drop.

Civil / Human Rights Committee: We have another holiday and celebrations coming in a week. MLK Day on January 15th. If you want to bank it, you may want to make that selection ASAP.
One of the last living Memphis Sanitation strikers of 1968 died on Jan 3, 2024. Elmore Nickelberry along with more than 1300 other sanitation workers struck for better working conditions and a living wage. They knew $1.65 a day wage wasn’t good enough. Read more of his story at www.AFSME.org.

Why ASAP

Aviation safety reporting programs play a pivotal role in enhancing and maintaining the safety standards of the aviation industry. These programs provide a structured mechanism for aviation professionals to report and analyze safety-related incidents, near misses, and potential hazards. By encouraging open and transparent reporting, these initiatives foster a safety culture that prioritizes continuous improvement and learning from experiences. Timely and accurate reporting allows industry stakeholders to identify trends, assess risks, and implement proactive measures to prevent future accidents. Moreover, these programs contribute to a collective knowledge base that benefits the entire aviation community, enabling authorities, airlines, and regulators to develop targeted safety interventions and implement effective changes to procedures, training, and technology.
