Local 514’s Digest for the week of August 1, 2025

Vice President:

TWU Local 514

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2025 election for our new board members! I’m confident that this exceptional group of leaders will do a great job representing your interests in all future matters.

We have a total of 1330 grievances. The majority of those deal with known crew chief outages and qualifications. We have arbitration scheduled in December to help resolve the crew chief outage issues.

Women’s Committee

We are starting a Back-to-School Supply Drive. Flyers are posted around the base. We will be accepting donations until August 29th.

All products will go to Emerson Elementary in Tulsa. Some of the needed items include facial tissue, paper towels, Lysol or Clorox wipes, crayons, watercolors, colored pencils, and 2” fold-able nap mats.

Recording Secretary:

I thank the membership for voting to continue to be your Recording Secretary. It’s been a pleasure working for the membership, and I will continue to do my best for the membership over the next three years.  I want to express my sincere gratitude to the esteemed membership of Local 514 for entrusting me with the responsibility of Recording Secretary for another term. The recent vote of confidence is deeply appreciated, and I am truly honored to continue serving in this vital role.

It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work on behalf of our membership, advocating for your interests and ensuring clear and effective communication within our local. Each member’s dedication and active participation make Local 514 such a strong and vibrant organization.

Over the past term, we have faced challenges and celebrated numerous successes. I am committed to building upon our achievements and addressing any future hurdles with the same diligence and collaborative spirit. My primary focus will always remain on upholding the values of our union and striving for the betterment of all members.

Looking ahead to the next three years, I pledge to continue dedicating my best efforts to this position. This includes meticulously maintaining accurate records, facilitating transparent information flow, and supporting the executive board in all their endeavors. I am eager to contribute to the continued growth and prosperity of Local 514, and I look forward to working closely with each of you to achieve our shared goals.

Thank you once again for your trust and support. I am truly excited for what we can accomplish together in the coming years.

Chairman of Maintenance:

Weekly Management Meetings

  • Grievance meetings
  • Management meeting
  • If you have any concerns I need to address with your management team, please let me know.

Social Media & Communication

  • Be cautious when posting on social media; your posts reflect on you and the company.
  • Be mindful of what you send in text messages—tone and content matter.

Sleeping at Work

  • Sleeping on the job is not permitted. There have been recent terminations due to this issue. Please remain alert and professional during work hours.

Safety Reminders

  • Hazardous Waste: The company is currently reviewing who is responsible for managing hazardous waste and dust barrels. Historically, this has been handled by facility maintenance. There is a discussion about shop workers taking over this responsibility, but this has not yet been decided. In my opinion, this should remain with facility maintenance.
  • Slips, Trips, and Falls remain the most frequent safety concerns at the Tulsa base. Stay aware of your surroundings and report any hazards.

Construction Areas

  • Follow all posted signs and detours.
  • Do not enter restricted or barricaded areas. These restrictions are in place for your safety.

Work Experience Review (WER)

  • If you have any questions or uncertainties about WER submissions, please speak with me before turning them in to the company.

Interactions with the Tulsa Admin Team

  • Please be respectful and professional when dealing with the Tulsa Admin Team. Recently, there have been incidents of employees yelling; this does not turn out well for us.

Tracy Hardin:

In case you could not attend the past union meeting, I have attached copies of reports from the Labor Assistance Professional conference and the AFL-CIO Southern Region meeting.

LAP:

The 2025 LAP Conference began for the members of the North Texas Chapter on Saturday, July 12th. The team from Local 514 was working with team members from 513 and 567. We were there to prepare and set up for the conference. Since we were part of the host chapters, getting a head start was crucial for a successful program. We worked till late in the evening preparing folders, making name tags, registration set up, and banner preparation. We were reminded that they were expecting over 500 attendees.

Our day one began way before any attendees arrived. With early registration starting at noon local, there was no time to wait. The opening ceremony was scheduled for 6:30 so putting the finishing touches on the process made for a semi- flawless first day, “AKA – Chrysler / Stellantis”. By the time of the opening, we had checked in almost 400 attendees with one of our own team collecting over $14,000.00 in registration fees.

Some of us missed the opening and welcome, but were able to catch the Keynote Speaker, Anthony Grupido. His address was to set the tone for all of us who assist the EAP/ SAP in the labor assistance arena. Helping our members first and foremost. Anthony showed us tools to support our Mental Wellness. He reminded us that we must take care of our mind and body to fully support a member in need. His presentation set the tone for a rapid-fire few days! Some of the topics covered:

·         Brain Under Siege – Dr. Steve Dewey, PHD

·         Suicide Prevention: The First 48 Hours – John Gaal, EdD

·         Injury Linked Substance Abuse – Madalyn Townsley, LCSW

·         Mental Health, Absenteeism, and Presenteeism – Dr. Paul Berkowitz, MD

·         The WEED / THC: Update 2025 – Ben Cort

Of course, there were many more presenters and connections to be made, but education was the key. The knowledge that we walked away with was priceless. LAP may be labor-driven, but it is designed to work with EAP professionals to address whole body issues, mind, body, and soul. For the second straight year our local EAP, Kristin MacKey was able to attend.

Some of the other unions and locals that attended were:

TWU, UAW, IAM, CWA, AFA, IBEW, Teamsters, Delta Air, SEIU, Laborers, Plumbers.

AFL-CIO Southern Region Meeting:

This two-day meeting was a combined training and state of the unions in the Southern region. It is a makeup of representatives from State Federations and Central Labor Councils. We here at 514 are part of the (AR, Ok, TN) region, and our representative is Jessy De La Pascua.

AFL-CIO President, Liz Shuler, explained why the southern region has become a vital player in the labor movement. She mentioned that there is still a strong and historical presence in the North, Northeast, Western United States.  With the rise of auto manufacturing, data centers, and clean energy production, this is the perfect time to make a strong push for union organizing.

Currently, there are 8 unions across the South working together to organize different facilities across diverse sectors. They have heard from workers looking for that voice, and unions are not afraid of having that conversation. This is especially true with ones that have been affected by recent layoffs and AI takeovers. Unions still have a 70% favorability rating in the South, and our credibility is very high across all demographics.

Here locally, what can and should we be doing? Here are some ideas I think we can work on.

·         Internal organizing (member education)

·         Union history (in-depth conversation)

·         Educating them on the Railway Labor Act

·         Remind members that Yes, you are in a union. It’s not just a job with better wages.

·         Partner with our allies

·         Find ways to be in the public eye on positive issues

We as local leaders must realize that we are in the fire every day at some level. We must pivot fast, pivot comfortably, and keep our composure.

Tracy Hardin
