Retirement
Medicare Part B Pricing
- Medicare Part B price can depend on your wages from two years prior. If your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) from two years ago goes over specific set limits, you must pay an extra fee called the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) on top of the standard premium.
- How the Income Rule Works
- Two-Year Lookback: The Social Security Administration checks the tax return you filed from two years ago (for example, 2024 tax data is used to calculate extra costs for 2026 premiums, this is a rolling two year lookback)
- Income Thresholds: If you file as a single person and your income from two years back was above $109,000, or above $218,000 for joint filers, you will pay a higher monthly Part B price.
- Standard Rate: If your income from two years ago fell at or below those limits, you pay only the standard base Part B premium.
- Life-Changing Events: If your income dropped significantly due to a major event like retiring or reducing work hours, you can ask the Social Security Administration to use your current lower income instead.
The presentation from the Retirement Seminar is available on the TWU Local 514 website, link here:
If you are considering retirement, please review these essential steps to ensure a smooth transition:
- Submit Formal Notice: Notify the company in writing at least 45 days prior to your last day of work. Include your final employment date and specify that you want your pension to commence the following day.
- Manage Your 401(k): Note that your 401(k) access will be locked for 30 days immediately following your retirement (though you may still move funds).
- Medicare Preparation: You will need Form L564 from American Airlines to avoid penalties when applying for Medicare Part B.
- Pension Planning: If you have a frozen pension, please consult with a Financial Advisor to help you select the right option. You can commence your pension online via the NetBenefits app or by calling Fidelity directly.
- Update Your Information: Ensure your contact details (email, phone, address, emergency contact) are updated before your departure.
- Access & IDs: Remember that your Jetnet access ends at midnight on your last day of employment. Be sure to order your retirement ID through Jetnet while you still have access; you will need to upload a photo for this.
- Benefits & Local 514:
- Your American Airlines benefits will also turn off at midnight on your last day.
- Please notify Local 514 of your intent to retire. Members in good standing are eligible for a retirement package, which includes a Bible, a TWU watch, and a Lifetime TWU Retiree Membership.
Important: You have the right to change your mind at any point before your actual last day of employment.
