We continue to work through the grievance process and follow up on outstanding cases to ensure our members’ contractual rights are protected.

Union Business / Meetings

On Monday, I attended our Monthly Executive Board Officers Meeting. These meetings give the officers an opportunity to discuss current issues affecting our membership, review ongoing union business, and make sure we remain focused on representing the interests of our members.

Benefits

Tuesday through Friday, I was in Tampa, Florida, attending the Summer Benefits Conference with the Local 514 Benefits Team.

The conference provided our Benefits Team with an opportunity to receive updated information, discuss benefit-related issues, and learn more about the programs and resources available to our members and their families.

Staying educated on our benefits is important because these programs can be complicated, and problems often arise when members need them the most. Our goal is to bring that information back to Local 514 so we can continue helping members understand their benefits, resolve issues, and make sure they are taking advantage of the benefits available to them.

Safety Corner – Complacency Is a Hazard

Many of us have performed the same jobs hundreds, if not thousands, of times. That experience is valuable, but it can also create one of the most overlooked hazards in the workplace: complacency.

When a task becomes routine, it is easy to go on autopilot. That is when steps can get skipped, PPE can get overlooked, shortcuts can become normal, and hazards that we would normally recognize can be missed.

Take the extra few seconds to look at the job before you start. Make sure you have the proper tooling, PPE, procedures, training, and manpower to perform the work safely. If something changes during the job, stop and reassess the situation.

And look out for the person working beside you. If you see something that doesn’t look right, speak up. Sometimes a coworker noticing something we missed is all it takes to prevent an injury.

No production goal, departure time, or schedule is more important than making sure everyone goes home safely at the end of their shift.

Experience makes us better at our jobs. It should never make us less careful.

Welfare & Entertainment

We have several upcoming events for our Local 514 members and families, so be sure to mark your calendars.

Tulsa Oilers Hockey – October 17
The Tulsa Oilers’ first home hockey game will be Saturday, October 17. Keep an eye out for additional information from Welfare & Entertainment.

Trunk or Treat – October 24
Our annual TWU Local 514 Trunk or Treat will be held Saturday, October 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the TWU Hall. Bring the family out for an evening of Halloween fun, including the candy haunted house, inflatables, and plenty of treats for the kids.

TWU Local 514 80th Anniversary Adult Party – November 21
Our annual Adult Party will be held Saturday, November 21, from 6:00 p.m. to midnight at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.

This year’s party is especially important as we celebrate 80 Years of TWU Local 514 – 1946–2026. We will have a live interactive DJ, photo booths, magicians, casino games with prizes, food, drinks, special guests, and more.

Built by our members. Powered by solidarity.

As we move toward another year and begin preparing for the work ahead, including future negotiations, we need to remember where the real strength of this Local comes from: our membership.

A union isn’t strong because of one officer, one steward, or one committee. A union is strong when its members stand together.

There will always be issues that we don’t agree on, but when it comes to protecting our contract, our jobs, our benefits, our working conditions, and the future of the people who will come behind us, we have to stand together.

Management will always know what they want when they come to the table. We need to be just as united about what our membership deserves.

175 grievances represent 175 reasons why enforcing our contract matters. Every grievance filed, every member represented, and every issue challenged sends the same message: our contract means something, and our membership will defend it.

As we prepare for what lies ahead, remember:

One member can raise a concern.
One steward can file a grievance.
But thousands of members standing together can move mountains.

Stay informed. Stay involved. Look out for one another.

We are TWU Local 514 — 80 years strong, and our strength has always been, and always will be, our solidarity.
