On Tuesday, September 8th, we have a 2nd Step Grievance Meeting with the Company. We will present and discuss multiple grievances in an effort to reach fair resolutions for our members. As always, we will continue to hold the Company accountable to the language of our Agreement and work to protect the contractual rights of every member we represent.
Union-Sponsored Benefits
I continued helping members this week get their new accounts set up for their Union-Sponsored Benefits through NGP. If you are having trouble getting your account set up or have questions about your benefits, please reach out, and we will do our best to help get you pointed in the right direction.
A quick benefit reminder: If you currently have the Critical Illness Plan through NGP, there is a $75 Health Screening Benefit available. If you have this coverage, make sure you take advantage of the benefits you are paying for. Every little bit helps, and sometimes these additional benefits can easily be overlooked.
Safety Corner – Labor Day: Work Safe and Look Out for Each Other
As we head into Labor Day weekend, I want to remind everyone that safety does not take a holiday. Holiday weekends can bring distractions, increased workloads, schedule changes, overtime, and the temptation to rush so we can get the job finished and get home. That is exactly when we need to slow down, stay focused, and look out for one another.
Take the time to use the proper PPE, follow established procedures, use the right tools and equipment for the job, and never take a shortcut that could put you or one of your coworkers at risk. If something doesn’t look right or doesn’t feel safe, speak up. No production goal, departure time, or deadline is more important than making sure everyone of us goes home safely at the end of our shift.
Labor Day is about America’s working men and women. The best way we can honor that is by protecting each other on the job. Work safely, watch out for your Union Brothers and Sisters, and make sure everyone goes home the same way they came to work.
Welfare & Entertainment
The Tulsa Drillers will wrap up their final home baseball stand of the season on September 4th, 5th, and 6th. This will be your last opportunity this season to take advantage of our Union tickets and enjoy a Drillers home game.
We hope our members and their families have had an opportunity to enjoy the games throughout the season. Thank you to everyone who has taken advantage of this benefit and helped make another season of Tulsa Drillers baseball a success for our membership.
Our Trunk or Treat is coming up on October 24th, and the Welfare & Entertainment Committee continues working to make this another great event for our members and their families.
Our TWU Adult Party will be held on November 21st at the Hard Rock as we celebrate a very special milestone—80 years of TWU Local 514! We have extended invitations to the Top 5 International Officers of the Transport Workers Union of America, and hopefully, they will be able to join us and help celebrate 80 years of Local 514 history, solidarity, and strength.
More information on both events will be coming as we get closer. We are looking forward to bringing our membership together and making these events something everyone can enjoy and be proud of.
Remember What Labor Day Stands For
As we celebrate Labor Day, I want everyone to remember that this holiday is about much more than a three-day weekend. Labor Day belongs to the working men and women of this country.
The wages we earn, the benefits we have, the protections in our contract, overtime, paid time off, workplace safety standards, and the ability to stand together and have a voice on the job did not simply appear. Generations of working men and women stood together, organized, sacrificed, and fought for many of the things we sometimes take for granted today.
For 80 years, the members of TWU Local 514 have carried that same tradition forward. Thousands of members have walked through these gates before us, and every generation has played a part in building the Local we have today. Now it is our responsibility to protect what they built and leave this Union even stronger for the members who come after us.
There will always be challenges and disagreements, but one thing should never change: when it comes to protecting our members, our work, and our contract, we are stronger when we stand together.
This Labor Day, take pride in what you do. Take pride in the skills you bring to American Airlines every day. Most importantly, take pride in being part of a Union that has stood for its members for eight decades.
Happy Labor Day to every member of TWU Local 514 and to working men and women everywhere.
