Labor Day Celebration 2015

[huge_it_slider id=”3″]

When you notice the signs that say Indian Nation Turnpike keep straight and another for you to exit to I-40, then you must be in Henryetta, Ok.

Yes, it is around 9 am and Main Street is beginning to fill on both sides with excited and enthusiastic onlookers for this small town’s main event. Every year the Labor Day Parade provides the locals an opportunity to show their support for labor and the impact we have on the state. It seems as though the whole town comes out to enjoy a full day of events from carnival rides to car shows. Another big part of the day’s events is the Marching Band Contest sponsored by Local 514.

This year wasn’t any different from previous years except for one big change. The attendance of members from Local 514 was way down. Now we had a good showing of dedicated retirees that did come out to support and help so that we could still host a top-notch contest.

The bands that participated were from the local town of Henryetta and were from as far away as Sapulpa, some 45 miles away.

The bands competed in three divisions with the results as follows:

Division 1:

Weleetka – First Place
Dewar – Second Place

Division 2:

Oktaha – First Place
Henryetta – Second Place
Caney valley – Third Place

Division 3:

Checotah – First Place (tie)
Sapulpa – First Place (tie)

Congratulations to all the bands that came out to strut their stuff and give their all.
