Union Plus

There are times when you don’t reep the benefits of an organization when you already meet the basic requirement, union membership. Union Plus is one of those organizations. They were founded by the AFL-CIO in 1986 to provide excellent consumer benefit programs exclusively to union members (current and retired) and their families. This is another one of those great benefits that is under utilized. To find out more information log onto www.unionplus.org  for more information.

Violations

Management has been diligent in the enforcement of the AA rules. The Flavor of the Week has been “ Resting your Eyes”  Please be aware that this is happening, keep an eye on your Brothers and Sisters in your area. When management gets their plan together and schedules enough work to keep us all busy, I am sure that this will stop. But until then, hurry up and wait!

Amfa

Amfa’s leadership has zero experience on the contract that was negotiated a year or so ago with American Airlines. amfa has roughly 3,700 members total in their organization. TWU has 10,000 in the group that amfa is raiding. amfa has built their membership on raided union workers. They have not ever organized non-union workers, but raided other unions to gain members. That in itself shows lack of integrity.

Amfa only has about $2.8 million in assets in their personal treasury, TWU having almost 18X that amount. From experience, those of us working in the airline industry and fighting for workers, having a few million dollars in a national treasury will not give an organization much room when engaged in contract battles with the company. Look at amfa’s track record. They only grew their total assets by about $1.2 million dollars between 2005 & 2019, while losing in the neighborhood of 12,660 members during the same time. Southwest went massive expansion, where TWU grew by roughly 17,000 members Southwest amfa failed to make any significant headcount gains. One can only attribute the lack of membership growth to the amfa’s letter of Agreement that allows Southwest to outsource mechanic’s work, in exchange for a mechanic headcount of no less than 2.75 heads per aircraft. TWU, by contrast, has grown the membership by about 700 members at Local 514 in the last few years. Amfa has little if any presence in Washington DC. By contrast, our TWU has a fulltime legislative team in DC fighting every day for the membership and workers across the county on issues that affect those lives. Check out the full article in TWU Express.

UNDERSTAND what & who a Union is. It is You. The strength of any union comes from it’s membership. The full power is wrapped up in all of us, not just an EBoard/Officers you elect, not just an International. The strengths you see, the weaknesses you see, the power to do better, it’s you. How involved are you? That’s a choice you make, right? Are you a strength or a weakness? What would change with a ‘new’ union….(?), nothing but the name across a different building.

Amfa will NOT change a thing for you, except, maybe to see many new faces gone, when jobs go away. Amfa’s track record speaks loudly for itself. We want our new hires to understand the pride and value of working and being union. There is a link on www.twu514.org site under the Resource Tab. Scroll down to the MIT Airline Data Project. Click on this to see some facts on headcount, outsourcing and more. Amfa has a proven history of slithering in when there is chaos from a company to the union workforce, (usually during contract negotiations), in what could well be a company attempt to bust that union. Educate yourself on facts, not amfa fiction.

WHISTLE WHILE YOU WORK

Some of you have a “Enough is Enough” whistle. A great safety device that can be used for many different things; alerting others if needed or when you are out and around and need help. We do have a few left if you would like to get one. Please stop by the Grievance Office or Union Hall.
