American Airlines Benefits Team
Dear Retiree,
Effective April 1, 2024, Fidelity Investments® will become the service provider for American’s retiree health reimbursement arrangements (RHRAs). Now you will have an integrated account experience, with access to your RHRA(s), 401(k) and pension (if applicable) all in one place. In addition, Fidelity offers a variety of easy-to-use tools and applications to help you plan, evaluate and track your finances.
More about our move to Fidelity
Below we’ve outlined key dates regarding the transition, including a blackout period during which you will not be able to access your existing RHRA credits as they move to Fidelity. This period is important to the transition process to help ensure a successful account transfer.
- Feb. 22 — Alight Smart-Choice Accounts debit card access will end. This is the last day you may use your Smart-Choice debit card before the RHRA blackout period begins.
- Feb. 26 — Reimbursement requests to Smart-Choice will end. This is the last day you can submit reimbursement requests to Smart-Choice for eligible expenses. Please include substantiation with your reimbursement claim to ensure it can be processed in time.
- Feb. 27–March 31 — The transition of the RHRAs begins, and the blackout period starts. During this time, you will not be able to access your existing RHRA credits. Please plan accordingly for any expected expenses. However, you can pay an expense out of pocket, save your receipt and submit for reimbursement at netbenefits.com/aa after the blackout period is completed.
- April 1 — The transition of the RHRAs is complete, and the blackout period has ended. Your credits are now available at Fidelity, and you can reimburse yourself for any eligible expenses and use your new Fidelity NetBenefits AccessCard®, which will be mailed to you in mid-March.
