Statement by Transport Workers Union of America Air Transport Director Garry Drummond on Today’s American Airlines Bankruptcy Hearing and TWU Actions in Response to DOJ Lawsuit

TWUNewsRoom

It became even more apparent in Judge Lane’s courtroom today that the best course of action for American Airlines, its workers and consumers is for the merger with US Airways to go forward as planned. The Department of Justice through its legal maneuvers is trying to create a duopoly where United and Delta would dominate commercial aviation in the United States and other carriers would be kept at a competitive disadvantage or relegated to being niche players.

The DoJ is trying to place our members at a competitive disadvantage. The Transport Workers Union will be rallying our members, engaging anti-trust lawyers, working with our allies in the AFL-CIO and its Transportation Trades Department to fight the DoJ’s lawsuit.

Among other things, anti-trust laws exist to stop duopolies. Combining US Airways and American Airlines puts an end to a duopoly by creating a new American Airlines that can go toe to toe with Delta and United.
