Local 514’s Digest for the week of Aug 26th, 2022

President Danker

Issues that continue to divide and harm our ability to be successful.

    • Crew Chiefs who are willing to play dodge-ball with their company buddies.
      • Thank you to the Union Crew Chiefs who do not participate.
    • Company always changing bid areas and reducing locations.
    • Company putting multiple crew chiefs in one location.
    • Company quietly whispers to guys to work OT while bypassing those signed up.
    • Company giving discipline for you using your earned sick benefits.

There’s more but I will stop at those.

VP Emerson continues to report out that the Tulsa base needs to put 737’s out on time. In my opinion the lack of leadership in hangar 1 and 2 is preventing this.

Dale Danker

Vice President

We are continuing to review grievances and getting them settled. You may be contacted by an officer if we need more information. Please attach any documents that help argue your grievance when you file.

It has come to our attention that the contract is being violated knowingly in some areas of the base. If you witness this happening, please contact an officer. Let’s work together to ensure we are all, Union and Management, following the provisions of the agreement between American Airlines and TWU/IAM Mechanic and Related.

We are preparing for Arbitration in September on the Company’s point system policy. If you have received points and have medical documentation to back up your absence, please get with a Union Rep to file a grievance and add the documentation for us to present.

International Representatives Sean Doyle and Jose Galarza were in Tulsa this week working on organizing the OMNI dispatch group. The board was able to sit with them and discuss some local issues.

Dale and I will be going to headquarters to present a few grievances at the GRB next week. We will be discussing 9ff, limited duty and a termination.

We are hiring 7 new MLS from the street.  That leaves 21 in our pool of applicants.  The pool expires the end of October.

B.J. Rackers

Chairman of Maintenance Control Techs

We have had several MCT’s bid off of the Airbus desk, which has resulted in probationary employees moved into those positions. The rounds of bidding for the vacancies has now concluded. As previously, reported we will begin the desk realignment due to desk to desk transfers on August 29th.

We met with the Company on 8/23 and discussed the MOC satellite station at DFW (DMCC). They have expressed interest in maintaining those positions and have funding for them through 2023.

DAT and Vacation Picks

It may not seem like it but we are quickly approaching the time to select the amount of DAT’s we would like and when we prefer to take vacations.

Starting in the middle of October everyone should check workbrain to see that the number of DAT’s requested is accurate. There will be a short window to do so. I will update on the dates when I have them.

American Airlines receives perfect score on the 2022 Disability Equality Index3 minute read

Created by Erum Mithani on Jul 22, 2022 12:08 PMsroom Feature

For the seventh year in a row, American Airlines received a top score of 100 on the Disability Equality Index® (DEI) and was named one of the best places to work for disability inclusion in 2022. Now in its eighth year, the DEI exists to help businesses make a positive impact on the unemployment/underemployment of people with disabilities.

Disability:IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) first launched the Disability Equality Index (DEI) in 2015. Today, the DEI is acknowledged as the most robust disability inclusion assessment tool in business. By taking the Disability Equality Index (DEI), companies demonstrate their commitment to disability inclusion and equality, as well as broader social issues, and enhance their reputation.

“At American Airlines, our mission is to care for people on life’s journey, and that starts with our team members,” said Cedric Rockamore, Chief Diversity Officer. “We have been intentional in creating an inclusive culture where people of all abilities feel welcomed, and American is proud to receive this prestigious recognition.” Globally, people with disabilities represent more than 1 billion people across all lines of age, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and religion.

“There is no single best way to practice disability inclusion, however, the companies taking the DEI share the desire to create a workplace that fosters the concept of bringing your whole self to the office,” said Maria Town, President and CEO of AAPD. “We look forward to working with all of the participants to help identify meaningful ways to build upon their current practices as we continue on the disability inclusion journey together.”

American CEO Robert Isom also recently signed the CEO Letter on Disability Inclusion as a part of Disability:IN’s global CEOs Are IN campaign. In the letter, CEOs call on peers to follow their lead and evaluate their corporate inclusion progress by taking the Disability Equality Index (DEI).

TWU Local 514 Outsourcing

First, let me say thank you for electing me as one of your Executive Board Officer at Large.  It is my privilege to serve this membership.  I have been assigned to the TWU Base Maintenance Review Committee per Article 6, Y., along with Bruce Rohr from Local 567, DWH Maintenance Base.

From the time I was elected, I have been working with all available information regarding Article 6, Recognition and Scope, specifically the Outsourcing of Aircraft, Engine, and Component Base Maintenance section, Article 6.E. through I.  As many of you know, I served on the JCCOW (Joint Committee of Contracting Out Work) from 2013-2019 along with Local 591 current President Gary Schaible. The outsourcing language has changed significantly with the new JCBA, we’re no longer under a percentage of spend formula. For Base Maintenance, we have language for AO, Engines, and Components.

AO and AO support shops has the 50% percent language in Article 6, F. and a minimum headcount of 2600 for AO and AO Overhaul direct support shops for all base maintenance stations, CLT, DWH, PIT, and TULE as outlined in Article 6, I. 1. & 2.

Components has a minimum headcount as outlined in Article 6, H.  “The company, however, shall maintain a minimum headcount of active component shop employees equal to at least twenty percent (20%) of the active employees across the system who are working in the aircraft overhaul, modification, and direct support shops”. At least forty percent (40%) will be Aviation Maintenance Technicians.

Engines are covered in Article 6, G., The Company, however, will continue to insource the work to be performed on the CFM56-7B, and CFM56-5B engine types and the 131-9B, 36-280/DHF, and 331-500 APU’s consistent with current practices as of March 26, 2020 for as long as the Company continues to use such engines and APU’s.

I will be reporting out additional information regarding the current percentage and headcount at our next membership meeting, August 29, 2022 at 7:15am, 11:45am, and 3:45pm.

I’ve been asked questions regarding the BDG (Business Development Group) we had in the past.  My understanding is the BDG came about in the “Working Together” process with a signed letter between Don Videtich, TWU International Representative and Carmine Romano, Senior VP Maintenance & Engineering.  This was a time when the Company was sharing information and including the Union in the decision-making process of insourcing work and many other issues.  The working together process ended around 2010.  The Bankruptcy CBA removed the Unions demand right to require the company to provide a monthly itemized report showing all sourced work and the Unions right to be involved in the decision-making process of insourcing and outsourcing work.  However, it’s my belief that it is always in our interest to try and persuade the company to insource as much work as possible to keep our Maintenance Bases and Line Stations full of work.  I am committed to help bring in as much work as possible.

And so is the Labor Day Parade.  The Henryetta Labor Day parade will kick off at 10am. This is the only Labor Day in Oklahoma and the easiest to attend. We ask that all unions and locals have a presence at the event. Besides the parade there is a full day of events to you and your busy family. The Tulsa State Fair runs from September 29 – October 9 this year and Local 514 will be needing volunteers to help man the booth.
