Local 514’s Digest for the week of Aug 29, 2025

TWU Local 514

President:

Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Monday, September 1st.

Labor Day History:

  • Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. “Labor Day” was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty states in the U.S. officially celebrated Labor Day.

Vice President:

Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day!

Jason and I presented at the GRB this week. If you are leaving your work area and going outside the gates for multiple hours at a time, that is time card fraud. Time card fraud is a method of theft and the company will terminate your employment. An arbitrator will not overturn a termination due to theft. Please be aware of the consequences of your actions.

Marla Johnson

Chairman of Material Logistics Specialist:

Grievances:

  • We currently have nine (9) open; two are being heard at GRB.
  • A lot of grievances are getting paid as soon as we turn in the grievance.  Our shop stewards are doing a great job in providing the information needed to resolve the grievances.

Holiday:

  • Have a safe and happy Labor Day.

Training:

  • Some new training has dropped, please make sure you stay caught up.

Chairman of Facilities Maintenance:

Happy Friday all

It Is Labor Day weekend and the AA base will have a shutdown this weekend, so a lot of your facilities group will be hard at work all weekend long, the incoming power to the base will be secured from the cam building -North this will involve several groups to manage, there will be to my knowledge, four generators to supply power to the things we can’t live without, Gse will be fueling and making sure these generators stay functioning, the Boiler Room will have extra people here for power plant operations, we will have plumbers and Electronics here for Fire Systems and of course, we will have Electrician‘s here from the hangers and base utilities….. if you see any of these groups, tell them thank you for me for keeping my job secure and the base safe.

On another note, you may have noticed that I haven’t added to the digest nor have I been seen around the base a lot these past couple of weeks, that’s because I have had some issues with family and I have been traveling for the union, I recently went to Dallas for the PPERB, This is a committee that reviews any new PPE that is or will be available for use on base and throughout the system.

On the 8th and 9th of September, I will be attending the contractual quarterly update by the company in Dallas regarding work that is primarily being done by corporate real estate, I will keep you informed of the outcome of this meeting.

While I’m absent, feel free to reach out to our executive union representatives, they are:

  • Kenny Miller-  Days
  • Tony Piparato “2 Sox” on afternoons

Since our hiring blackout (because of shift bids) we have had several openings throughout our organization, and we will need to discuss with our managers to ensure these positions are filled.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day. I’m sure you’ve earned it.

As always feel free to contact me at any time.

The second day will feature representatives from AA speaking on the changes for annual enrollment. More details will be provided next week.

Several members have recently encountered issues, only to discover that their payroll deductions for union voluntary benefits had never been started. Please check your paychecks to ensure your deductions are active.

AERO:

I continue to meet with management weekly to address grievances and other issues. There were several issues with the past bid selection process. Remember, if you are unsure or confused with the process, go over to the admin center and ask for help and always log out of your session when you are done.

BENEFITS:

The open enrollment dates are planned for November 3rd – 19th. Start gathering information if you need to make changes to your current coverage.

EVENTS:

Labor Day will be on September 1st. Since that is a union negotiated holiday, we all can celebrate the contributions that unions have made to the labor movement. If you have a few hours, come visit the town of Henryetta where they hold the official State Labor Day celebration. With more than ten thousand visitors over three days, there is something for everyone in the family. Come out and join the TWU as we celebrate the day for labor.

The Tulsa State Fair will begin before you know it. September 25 – October 5th will be the eleven days of fun. The union will be needing volunteers on the first day and the last day to promote Local 514. If  you would like to help out, contact an officer or call the hall to sign up.

Veterans Day will be celebrated on November 7th and the Tulsa Veterans Day Parade is a major event to honor our veterans, past and present. Everyone is welcome to come out and be a part of one of the top five Veterans Day Parades in the country!

For more information or to volunteer for any of these events, please give me a call.
