Local 514’s Digest for the week of Mar 10, 2023

President:

All,

Please sign up for 8 hours OT on any shift if that is your preference. If a Supervisor tells you, or you hear that they will cancel OT if someone signs up for 8 hours, please get their name for me and I will file yet another Presidential grievance on your behalf. Violating your rights like that is a direct threat and I will take that up with AA legal.  I’m only hearing of these threats in Craig Sully’s bid areas. Let’s stick together like Union Brothers and Sisters and make him famous.

Vice President:

If you are bypassed for Overtime or a Field Trip because the company is saying you are not qualified please get with a Union Steward in your area and file a grievance. The company continues to add qualifications to specific tasks. Those qualification lists should be accessible to employees and be kept current to reflect each employee’s qualifications for overtime and field trips. Art 18 para.R

Last week Dale and I presented a Presidential grievance on this Qualification issue. If it is denied we will ask for the grievance to be slated for arbitration.

March is Women’s History Month

Bessie Coleman was an American civil aviator. She was the first woman of African and Native American descent to hold a pilots license. Unable to get the schooling in the US, she saved up her money and went to France to become a licensed pilot. Bessie returned to the US and became a successful air show pilot until her fatal accident in 1926.

FLOC

This week, Tulsa hosted the international FLOC committee training. TWU International provided two labor law attorneys (Christina Gornail and Holly Oliva-Van Horsten ) to present negotiation training. During the first two days of training, we covered language interpretation, rules and conduct.  On the final day, we broke into six different groups, three union groups, and three company groups. We discussed and strategized the current contract for the first half of the day. Then we attempted to negotiate. One of the groups successfully reached a contract. The other two groups stalled out which would have possibly led to a strike. All in all, I feel this was the best training that I have been a part of as a Union officer.  The information gained will be extremely useful in all aspects of my current and future Union leadership rolls

Two current reasons why AA WINS Grievances:

    •   The Greivent doesn’t file a grievance within five days of the violation.
    •   When the Union Rep/Steward doesn’t second step the grievance.

I will be out of the country and on vacation the week of Mar 13th and the week of Mar 20th, I will have very limited phone/email access. If you need assistance, please contact the Grievance office @ 918-292-3213 or the union hall @ 918-437-4300.

Thank You,
Joe Brown

Chairman of Material Logistics Specialist:

  • I reached out to management about our potential new hires. All offers were accepted.  Everyone is going through compliance.  The majority of them will be going to the Hangars but a handful will be going to other areas.
  • I also attended The FLOC banquet Monday night and helped them commute to and from the Union Hall all week.  TWU members from Rail, Bus, and Air across the system came to Tulsa.
  • We have 90 open grievances.  If you feel like you have a valid grievance, get with a Union Rep to discuss it. Don’t let management tell you it’s not valid.
  • Management held interviews this week to replace Mamye Moore. I don’t know if the new supervisor will take her spot or if there will be movement again.
  • The Audit is coming up at the end of the month. Everyone needs to make sure you are completing all of the transactions needed and putting the inventory in the correct area. If you have any questions regarding the process ask your Crew Chief for direction.  We need to improve our score from last year.
  • If you are on a Shift Swap please check in with the Crew Chief at the beginning of the shift to get your job assignment.
  • We have our TWU Family Event coming up next month. Flyers have been put up across the Base.  Please scan the QR code to sign up. We haven’t had a family event in a long time so this should be a lot of fun. If you have a problem signing up or have questions please reach out to event@twumail.org

Chairman of Facilities Maintenance:

Happy Friday and thank you Veterans

This week we had a hiring event at the Tulsa Tech campus in Owasso for the open cleaner positions and I was fortunate enough to be able to help sort through the candidates, it made me realize the talent we have at the Tulsa base, it also restored my faith in the younger generation it seems they are just as motivated and as hardworking as the generations before them,  thank you all for allowing me to be a part of this.

This upcoming week we will be having the state of Oklahoma lead electrical inspector visit the Tulsa base and yes he was invited, he will be talking to management and the union about the required licensing in Oklahoma… stay tuned for future details.

As always feel free to call me anytime

Last week we attended arbitration training that was conducted by the arbitrators themself. Great information and great insight.

On Monday we had 8 hour computer training.

This week the International FLOC met here at Local 514 and I attended their meet and greet on Monday night. On Tuesday myself and one of the on-sight IAM rep helped with the Tech Crew Chief panel for hangars 5&6.

I also had a meeting with the management of AAERO over grievances and current work issues.

Wednesday and Thursday I assisted with the cleaner interviews that consisted of more than 130 candidates. Thursday night I attended a meeting of the NEOK Labor Council. The meeting was attended by State AFL-CIO president and TWU member Jim Curry.

Stop Social Security related scams

On National Slam the Scam Day and throughout the year, we give you the tools to recognize Social Security-related scams and stop scammers from stealing your money and personal information. Share scam information with your loved ones. Slam the Scam!

Recognize the four basic signs of a scam:

    1. Scammers pretend to be from a familiar organization or agency, like the Social Security Administration. They may email attachments with official-looking logos, seals, signatures, or pictures of employee credentials.
    2. Scammers mention a problem or a prize. They may say your Social Security number was involved in a crime or ask for personal information to process a benefit increase.
    3. Scammers pressure you to act immediately. They may threaten you with arrest or legal action.
    4. Scammers tell you to pay using a gift card, prepaid debit card, cryptocurrency, wire or money transfer, or by mailing cash. They may also tell you to transfer your money to a “safe” account.

Ignore scammers and report criminal behavior. Report Social Security-related scams to the SSA Office of the Inspector General (OIG).

Visit www.ssa.gov/scam for more information and follow SSA OIG on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to stay up to date on the latest scam tactics. Repost #SlamtheScam information on social media to keep your friends and family safe.
