September 5th.
The United Way Day of Caring 2014 was conducted at two locations this year, the YMCA in Owasso and Grimes Electuary in Tulsa. There were 35 volunteers of which 20 were union members one being a retiree. Both of the organizations provided lunch while the TWU provided the drinks again this year, water and soda.
The day began at 07:00 with an event kickoff in the Kendall- Whitaker Neighborhood in Tulsa. Then it was on to the locations with a vast array of projects slated for the day.
At the YMCA we completed prepping and painting an arts and crafts room, cleaning at least 80 pieces of exercise equipment, and multiple garden projects including t-ball fields and the around the building. We also had the pleasure to help tear down a 15ft. x 40ft. wall, what a joy.
At the Grimes location we cleaned and spruced up two gardens along the front of the building. We also painted 12 pieces of playground equipment including basketball goals, stained 6 benches and painted the basketball court-playing surface. After everything was dry we purchased and installed new nets for the final touch.
