A History Note from President Dale Danker,

The Ludlow Massacre was a domestic massacre resulting from strike-breaking. The Colorado National Guard and Colorado Fuel and Iron Company guards attacked a tent colony of 1,200 striking coal miners and their families in Ludlow, Colorado, on April 20, 1914, with the National Guard using machine guns to fire into the colony. Approximately 21 people, including miners’ wives and children, were killed. The chief owner of the mine, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., was widely excoriated for having orchestrated the massacre.

PBS VIDEO: One of the most significant events in the struggle for labor laws in America played out in Las Animas County in the Spring of 1914. With the control of much of Colorado’s coal mines in the hands of just a few companies, miners grew increasingly intolerant of low wages and dangerous working conditions. Over the next few months, tensions escalated as the striking miners ransacked several mines.

New Members!

Be sure and welcome them.

Thanksgiving.

Every day we have been blessed, we are blessed with family, friends and we are also blessed with a work environment that is Safe. We have been blessed with a living wage and we are treated with dignity in the workplace. In no way does this mean that we do not have to fight for all the above. The work of labor is never to rest for the great power of corporate greed is forever devising.

We ask that you take time this Thanksgiving to remember these things, and also give to those less fortunate.

From all the officers of Local 514,

Have a Thankful Thanksgiving.
