MCIE Capacity Reductions 06-11-09

Dear Colleagues, The airline industry has been hard hit by the recession.  The past year has been a period of change and adjustment for our maintenance organization and all of American Airlines. Despite the 2008 capacity and fleet reductions that decreased the M&E workload, we were able to minimize the initial Title II reductions at the Kansas City Maintenance Base based upon additional work at MCIE.  Unfortunately, this work is now completed; and our current business case requires a reduction in force of approximately 40 Title II positions. This is a difficult time for all employees and their families.  As we have done in the past, we will be offering the Stand-in-Stead (SIS) voluntary separation program.  As a reminder, to be offered a SIS, TWU-represented employees must be in the same classification and status as those positions deemed surplus.  To learn more about this option, log onto Jetnet. We know that the reduction process is unpleasant and difficult for everyone.  Unfortunately, this is a necessary step to ensure that we are competitive in the future.  As we go forward, I want to emphasize the importance of running a safe and dependable airline in order to strengthen our position in the industry. Sincerely, (Original Signature On File) Fred Cleveland Vice President Base Maintenance More on this: During the last few months, American Airlines was able to delay a reduction in force of our Facilities Maintenance positions at the Kansas City Maintenance Base despite the 2008 capacity and fleet reductions that decreased the M&E workload. These positions have been used to finish temporary work at the base.  Unfortunately, now that the work has been completed, a reduction in force of approximately 40 positions is necessary. Additional Information Title II Facilities Maintenance employees support and perform the day-to-day upkeep of the maintenance complexes and facilities. We are taking steps to lessen the number of involuntary furloughs required by continuing to offer voluntary programs for TWU-represented employees.  Voluntary programs are described in Jetnet on the People Reduction Page.  Go to Jetnet>Click Policies and Procedures>Click People Reduction Information on the left side of the page. Remember that voluntary programs will be granted and the date of separation determined, based on location, skill set, and seniority in accordance with the work plan and collective bargaining agreements, where applicable. The AA/TWU Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) govern reductions in force.  Impacted employees may have opportunities at other stations either to displace junior employees or to take vacancies. Effective dates for MCIE Title II separations and reductions have not been determined, but will be announced shortly. If we determine WARN notices are necessary, we will issue WARN letters per our legal requirements, based on federal and state laws.
