Additional information on Nov. 24 vaccine requirement deadline

Summary

Last week, we shared that the federal vaccine mandate will require all of American’s U.S.-based team members and international-based crew members to be fully vaccinated by Nov.? 24. Here is additional information as you talk to your teams, as a follow-up to yesterday’s Directors and Above call.

Key Points

  • Everyone must submit their vaccination information by Nov.? 24. If team members are seeking an accommodation, that submission needs to be in by Nov.? 24 as well.
  • Of course, there is no need to wait that long and we are asking that everyone get their information in as soon as possible.
  • Everyone who submits an accommodation request will continue working while the request is reviewed.
    • You will continue to be in active status while your accommodation is being reviewed and you should continue to work your schedule.
    • You will not be put on unpaid leave, although you may be asked to follow additional safety guidelines while your accommodation request is reviewed.
    • If your accommodation request is approved, we will follow up to discuss what steps you’ll need to take in order to work safely at American.
  • The accommodation review process may take some time, as we want to ensure we give a fair review to all requests. That is in part why it is important for team members to keep working during the review process.
    • Team members whose accommodation requests are approved: These team members will be able to continue working as long as they agree to certain safety-related accommodations. We are still working to develop accommodations that will allow everyone to continue working – and we will communicate those accommodations as we process the requests.
    • Team members whose accommodation requests are denied: We will ask those team members to meet our vaccination requirement, and we will provide an opportunity for team members to get fully vaccinated. But if that request is not met, we will begin discussions about termination. For represented team members, that means we will follow the investigative process under your collective bargaining process.
    • Team members who do not submit anything (neither their vaccine information nor an accommodation request): We will be in touch regarding next steps. Until those conversations are complete, these team members should continue working. For represented team members, that means we will follow the investigative process under your collective bargaining process.
  • We don’t want to fire a single person because of this. But if someone chooses to not get vaccinated and does not have an approved medical disability or religious accommodation, that leaves us with no other choice. So, please get vaccinated.
