President:
They want Maximum and give you Minimum.
As always, look out for management, they are not our friends.
They want maximum effort from you while they give you minimum respect, minimum input on how to flow an airplane, minimum vacation/dat ratios and minimum headcount at the bases. They do this while violating the contract everywhere they can. Crew chiefs being in locations with multiple other crew chiefs and making dodge-ball situations for picking crews, violating “OT” and field trip opportunities for you by installing a qualification list that requires your signature, a signature they will use to discipline you if you don’t perform to their expectations. Expectations from supervisors that do not know a damn thing about aviation.
In Craig Sully’s shops he has his supervisors telling employees that if they sign up for 8 hours OT he will cancel it. He wants people to sign up for only 4 early or 4 late so he doesn’t have to pay people double time. From a Union President perspective that’s threatening bullcrap and I recommend you all stick together and only sign up for 8 hours. If he wants to deny you your contractual right to that OT proffer then I say let the work pile up till it hurts him. The company will threaten you by saying we will just send it out. They have us at minimum headcount anyway. Stand together and start calling their bluffs on this bullcrap that is hurting you. Stand together and their decisions will only hurt them.
So when the Company tells you in meetings or out on the floor to step it up, tell them ” I’m doing the maximum I can Boss, are you”. I’m sure a standard lie will then float out of their mouth.
Do they really want maximum effort?
It sure seems like they are making poor decisions to make you think about giving them minimum effort.
In short, never trust management and file a grievance on every violation.

Executive Board Members at Large:
In 1859 the railroads began to expand their service across the United states. A Chicago businessman named George Pullman convinced them to convert two old passenger cars into luxurious sleeping cars. In 1867 the first pullman porter began working aboard the sleeping cars and the service became a huge hit for travelers. George began to recruit Black men to lug baggage, shine shoes, set up and clean berths, and service passengers. Their schedule often required them to work 400 hours a month with little time off. After many failed attempts to join the American Railway Union the pullman porters formed the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in 1925 with the help of A. Phillip Randolph. Mr. Randolph was a social activist and publisher of the political literary magazine The Messenger. Randolph and the Brotherhood had to work for more than 10 years to secure their first contract.
Randolph would go on to play key roles in the civil rights movement.

Grievance Tracking
The Local 514 Data Operations unit heard during the Union Representative training on February 7th, 2023, that a small piece of the grievance application wasn’t working as intended, and after learning of this, the seasoned programmer that has been a member of Local 514 for the past 9980 days (as of the date of this posting), Michael Salamon, swung into action and fixed the piece that was broken.
Also during that same meeting another member had a suggestion to improve the grievance application with a notification service at a certain step, and I am happy to report that it has been implemented.
If you have any problems or suggestions for the grievance tracking application, please let us know, because if we don’t know something isn’t working it’s hard for us to fix it.
Thanks,
Allan Ball
