Local 514’s Digest for the week of Feb 3, 2023

President:

What is the Performance Policy?

The Company has always had an Attendance Policy and a Performance Discipline Policy they were called ACP and PPC.

They do not ask this Union or any other Union on the property for permission to change policies. They write their policies and we uphold our contractual language if we feel like it violates it.

The sick point policy is an example. The Union leadership along with Union Attorneys took that case in front of an Arbitrator. We have yet to learn what the Arbitrator’s decision is.

The new Performance Policy you are reading about is the old USAir policy. This new policy has 3 steps of discipline before termination. The old policy the TWU employees were under only had 2 steps then termination.

There have been some ridiculous social media posts about why the Union would agree to this new policy.

The company did not ask our opinion but I’m thinking if I was an employee that is always on the cusp of being terminated I would be excited that this new policy gives me one more chance before termination.

I’m hopeful that soon we will have our video room finished and we can start putting out videos to explain in greater detail these things that impact your life.

Take care and keep a look out for management sneaking around.

Chairman of Facilities Maintenance:

Let it snow

This week we have had a couple of icing events. On these days it’s nice to stay in your jammies by a fire drinking hot chocolate and watching a good Netflix, but if you have to work it’s nice to know facilities has cleaned a safe path for you and a clean parking spot, our group was busy this week cleaning all hours of the night and day.

Thank you to all involved in that effort, I know I appreciated it.

Break Room and Restroom refresh

The Facilities maintenance group will be doing the outer buildings instead of the contractors, our first building we will be doing is the Facilities Maintenance building where the automotive shop is located and we start Monday 2/6/23.

I’m sure the first few we will encounter issues but with our team I’m positive we will get it worked out quickly and provide a safe, clean environment at a considerable cost savings to the company.

If you have any specific questions about this project or any other, don’t hesitate to call me.

More than just a mail carrier. The little known travel guide for African American travelers during the Jim Crow laws of segregation had a strong labor influence. The Negro Motorist Green Book, known simply as the Green Book, was written by a postal worker, travel writer, and WWI veteran name Victor H.Green. The book was published between 1936-1966 and became a major resource for lodging, restaurants, and even gas stations for black travelers during these difficult times. The book expanded to cover jewish travelers that found themselves in the same predicament. He was able to print 15,000 copies each year. Labor has made positive changes to people’s lives even in a small way.

As of Thursday, Feb 02, 2023 we have 29 aircraft outsourced at vendors and 27 aircraft our four(4) maintenance bases.

This week I received a call regarding a premium bid job that was posted via the Transfers & Bid System.  One of the positions was awarded to someone on an approved LOA.  Are members on LOA eligible to bid on jobs posted via the Transfers & Bids system?  The answer is yes, however the award is based on company policy/discretion of when the member will return to work.

Fraternally,

Jay Potter
