Local 514’s Digest for the week of May 5, 2023

President:

No word on sick points arbitration.

Working with the Association on several Presidential grievances that I’m finding out seem to be system wide violations.

This week I attended a meeting in DC at the TWU International office. The meeting was to introduce the Presidents on the threats of AI technology and the amount of money companies are investing to attempt to eliminate every possible human they can from  payrolls.

I’m available 24/7 @ 918-636-6089

On May 11, 2023 a joint event to help veterans with earned services. The TWU Veterans Committee and the Tulsa Base VEMERG will be hosting a Veterans Benefit Fair in hangar ¾  town hall room from 9am – 5pm. If you have benefit questions or need assistance, please stop by and bring your DD214.

Oklahoma Veterans Registry

Senate Bill 415 became effective November 1, 2021. All new applicants for sales tax exemption based on a veteran’s 100% service-connected disability status are required to register in the Oklahoma Veterans Registry to verify eligibility. If you have not already registered, please do so immediately to avoid a delay or suspense in this important state benefit.

The Oklahoma Veterans Registry can be accessed at the following link: https://registry.odva.ok.gov/registration

The conversation about Private School Vouchers is a hot topic at the state capitol right now. Lawmakers are at an impass about many of the proposals with many showing their history of focusing on the first five years. We should ask them to tell us their multi-year projections and the impact on public schools.

So contact your representative and ask them a few questions:

      • How does this proposal help retain or increase high-quality teachers for my public schools in my community?
      • What will this program be expected to cost three to five years from now?
      • Vouchers, in the form of tax credits, will likely cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars. How will losing this revenue affect other key state services, such as education and law enforcement?
      • My child’s rural public school district is really small. Would losing even just a handful of students to private schools or homeschooling cause my school district to consolidate or close?
      • How would a decrease in public school enrollment impact the ability for my child’s school to offer specialty classes or extracurricular activities?
