The TWU Honors the 19th Anniversary of 9/11
Today marks the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The TWU honors the sacrifices made by Cabin Crews, Passengers, First Responders and all the innocent victims who perished that day.
The TWU also celebrates all of our members who played a significant role in the following months selflessly assisting with response, transportation, rescue, recovery and clean up at Ground Zero. We mourn those who have died from illnesses sustained while working at Ground Zero, and the many who continue to suffer and succumb to Ground Zero-related illnesses nearly two decades later.
The TWU will continue to remember the tragedy of 9/11. We promise to never forget, especially our union family members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Social Security Tax and AA:
“We have received a few questions from team members about whether American plans to defer its payroll tax obligations for the remainder of this year, as permitted by an Executive Order from early August.
The order allows U.S. employers to defer their payroll tax obligations from Sept. 1, 2020, to Dec. 31, 2020, which would allow U.S.-based team members to see a small increase in their take-home pay through the end of 2020. This deferral would be temporary, and it would simply push off our team members’ payroll tax obligation not eliminate the tax altogether.
Given we expect we would be obligated to collect these taxes from team members and pay them next year — meaning any benefit to our team for the remainder of 2020 would be offset by the need to “double up” on payroll taxes collected in early 2021, this is not something American plans to implement at this time.
We will update team members if circumstances change and we opt to pursue it.”

Extra Dues payment in 2020:
Members that did not take any options for a week’s pay, (reference the Pay in Arrears July 17 ,2020 Pay Statement) did not make the extra payment.
Members that took any of the pay options, had a dues payment taken out of that week’s pay.
American chose to fix this issue by averaging the amount taken from each pay period at a lower rate. This is their attempt to address the overpayment issue. That should work for all that did make the extra payment. For those that didn’t make the extra payment, yet they lowered your dues rates as well, you will be short a dues payment for the year. We are waiting on an answer from AA and International on how that will be addressed or collected.

VOTE
The 2020 elections are 53 days away – with early and absentee voting starting as soon as the end of this month in some states. The TWU is excited to announce a new, one-stop hub for our members to prepare for these important elections, including digital mobilization tools, registering to vote, and best practices to get to the polls safely.
This will be a unique election for all of us. Social distancing will make getting out the vote look very different than usual. We’ve all adjusted to the new day-to-day of these challenges and we have learned best practices that we can apply to planning when, how, and where we will vote. Whether you are getting your ballot delivered to you through the United States Postal Service or you are planning to safely go to the polls, the TWU wants you to be prepared and ready to cast your ballot under these extreme circumstances.
Election Day is November 3, 2020 – which means it’s the last day you can vote.
Be sure to check your registration status and get all the information you need to vote, including deadlines, vote by mail, how to request an absentee ballot and more

VLOA Participants in Payroll Overpayment
For members who elected VLOA , we have been receiving several calls that American Airlines has now put members in an overpayment situation. This overpayment is a combination of the “being paid current” transiting to the “pay in arrears” method and the election of VLOA were members who chose to be paid a lower number of hours to be on a leave of absence .
Although when reviewing these overpayments were finding most to be true ,YOU AS A MEMBER HAVE A RIGHT TO CALL PAYROLL (8004472000) TO REQUEST AN AUDIT AND BREAKDOWN OF THEIR overpayment.
For members who wish to have the union review the overpayment please print off all pay statements prior to going on the VLOA thru overpayment . Please call the hall and make an appointment with us.
We do realize this is very frustrating for members who step up to help the company during hard times to be put into large overpayment situations.
